Lesson 13 - Descending with Confidence

๐ŸŽ“ BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY | LESSON 13 Descending with Confidence

Climbing gets you to the topโ€ฆ

Descending gets you home safely.

Many cyclists feel nervous on fast descents, but confidence comes from good techniqueโ€”not taking unnecessary risks.

The goal isn't to be the fastest rider down the hill. The goal is to be smooth, controlled and safe.

๐Ÿ‘€ 1. Look Where You Want to Go
Your bike naturally follows your eyes. Instead of looking directly in front of your wheel, look through the corner toward your exit. Your body will naturally steer a smoother line.

๐Ÿ›‘ 2. Brake Before the Corner
The safest time to slow down is before entering a corner. Avoid grabbing the brakes while leaning through a turn. Instead: โœ” Slow before the corner. โœ” Release the brakes. โœ” Roll smoothly through the bend.

๐Ÿšด 3. Relax Your Grip
Many riders grip the handlebars far too tightly when descending. Relax your hands. Keep soft elbows. Allow the bike to move naturally underneath you. A relaxed rider is a smoother rider.

โš–๏ธ 4. Stay Balanced
Keep your weight centred over the bike. On steeper descents:

  • Bend your elbows.
  • Lower your chest slightly.
  • Keep your pedals level.
  • Stay loose, not rigid.
Good balance creates confidence.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ 5. Stay Calm
Fear causes tension. Tension causes mistakes. Take slow breaths. Stay relaxed. Ride within your own comfort zone. Confidence grows every time you descend safely.

๐Ÿ’— Bonus Tip
Long descents still mean time in the saddle. Even when you're coasting, movement between your body, shorts and saddle creates friction. Applying Booty Butter before your ride helps keep you comfortable all the way back to the bottom. Comfort means one less distraction when your focus needs to stay on the road.

Remember...
Every confident descender started by taking it slowly. Smooth riders are usually the fastestโ€”and the safest. Ride your own ride. Progress comes one descent at a time.

๐Ÿ’— Ride Comfortable. Ride Confident. Ride Further.

๐Ÿ’ก Coach Booty Says "Speed doesn't build confidence. Good technique does."

โญ Gold Star Tip Keep your outside pedal down and apply gentle pressure through it when cornering. It improves stability and grip through the turn.

โ“ Question of the Week What makes you most nervous when descending?
๐Ÿšด Fast speed
 โ†ฉ๏ธ Tight corners
 ๐Ÿ’จ Strong winds
 ๐Ÿ˜Ž I love descending!
