Lesson 22 - Riding Into a Headwind

🎓 BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY | LESSON 22 Riding Into a Headwind

Every cyclist has faced it. You turn the corner and suddenly it feels like someone has put the brakes on.

Headwinds can be physically demanding and mentally frustrating, but with the right technique, you can ride smarter—not just harder.

🌬️ 1. Slow Down, Don't Fight It
A headwind isn't a sign that you're getting weaker. It's simply extra resistance. Instead of trying to maintain your usual speed, ride to your effort level.

Accepting a slightly slower pace will help you conserve energy for the rest of your ride.

⚙️ 2. Shift to an Easier Gear
One of the biggest mistakes riders make is grinding a heavy gear. Shift down and keep your legs spinning smoothly.

Aim for a comfortable cadence rather than forcing each pedal stroke. Efficient pedalling beats brute strength.

💨 3. Tuck In and Reduce Drag
Your body is the biggest source of wind resistance. Lower your upper body slightly. Relax your shoulders. Keep your elbows bent.

A more aerodynamic position helps you cut through the wind with less effort.

🤝 4. Work Together
If you're riding with others, take turns at the front. Sharing the workload means everyone saves energy. Even short turns in the wind can make a big difference over a long ride.

Teamwork makes tough conditions much easier.

🧠 5. Stay Positive
Headwinds can play games with your mind. Don't focus on your speed. Focus on maintaining a steady effort.

Remember—you'll probably enjoy the tailwind on the way home! A positive mindset is one of your strongest cycling skills.

💗 Bonus Tip
When you're pushing harder into a headwind, you'll naturally spend more time seated.

Applying Booty Butter before you ride helps reduce friction and keeps you comfortable, so you can stay focused on maintaining a smooth, efficient effort.

Comfort helps you ride stronger for longer.

Remember...

You can't control the wind. But you can control how you respond to it.

Ride smart. Stay relaxed. Trust your training.

💗 Ride Comfortable. Ride Confident. Ride Further.

💡 Coach Booty Says "Don't fight the wind—work with it. Smooth riders always finish stronger than stubborn riders."

⭐ Gold Star Tip Watch the trees, flags and long grass before you turn a corner. They'll often tell you where the wind is coming from before you feel it.
