Lesson 24 - When to Stand and When to Sit

🎓 BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY | LESSON 24 When to Stand and When to Sit

One of the most common questions new cyclists ask is:

"Should I stand up or stay seated when climbing?"

The answer is... both!

Knowing when to stand and when to stay seated will help you save energy, improve traction and become a more efficient rider.

The best cyclists constantly change their position to suit the terrain.

🪑 1. Stay Seated for Efficiency
For most climbs, staying seated is the most efficient option.
It helps you:
  • Conserve energy.
  • Maintain a steady cadence.
  • Keep the rear wheel planted for better grip.
  • Ride more smoothly over long distances.
If the climb isn't too steep, sitting is usually your best choice.

⛰️ 2. Stand on Steep Sections
Standing allows you to use your body weight to push the pedals.
 It's useful when:
  • Tackling short, steep climbs.
  • Accelerating over the crest of a hill.
  • Getting over a sudden rise.
  • Stretching your legs and hips.
Stand only when needed—it's a powerful tool, but it uses more energy.

⚖️ 3. Keep the Bike Balanced
When you stand, avoid throwing the bike from side to side. Keep your movements smooth and controlled.

Relax your upper body, bend your elbows and let the bike move naturally beneath you. Balance is more important than brute strength.

🔄 4. Change Position Regularly
Even on flat roads, changing your position every so often helps.
Standing briefly can:
  • Relieve pressure on your saddle.
  • Improve circulation.
  • Stretch tight muscles.
  • Reduce fatigue on long rides.
Small position changes make a big difference over time.

😊 5. Listen to Your Body
There's no perfect formula. If your legs feel heavy, stand for a few pedal strokes. If your heart rate spikes, sit back down and find your rhythm.

The smartest riders adapt to how they feel—not just the road.

💗 Bonus Tip
Standing gives you a short break from the saddle, but you'll spend most of your ride seated.

Applying Booty Butter before every ride helps reduce friction during those long seated sections, keeping you comfortable so you can focus on riding efficiently.

Comfort supports endurance.

Remember...

Good cyclists don't stay in one position all day. They move with the road.

Sit when it saves energy. Stand when it helps. Ride smarter.

💗 Ride Comfortable. Ride Confident. Ride Further.

💡 Coach Booty Says "Standing is a tool—not a lifestyle! Use it when you need it, then settle back into a smooth rhythm."

⭐ Gold Star Tip Practice standing for 10–15 pedal strokes on gentle hills during training. The more you practise, the smoother and more confident you'll become when you really need it.
