Lesson 30 -Night Riding Essentials
π BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY Lesson 30 β Night Riding Essentials
π Riding After Dark? Be Seen. Stay Safe.
Cycling at night can be one of the most enjoyable times to ride. The roads are often quieter, the temperatures are cooler, and there's something peaceful about riding under the stars.
But riding in the dark also comes with extra responsibilities. The biggest challenge isn't seeing the roadβit's making sure everyone else can see you.
Here's how to ride safely after sunset.
π‘ 1. Use the Right Lights
A good lighting setup isn't optionalβit's essential.
At a minimum you should have:
π¦ Bright white front light
π΄ Bright red rear light
β¨ Flashing mode during busy traffic (where legal)
π‘ Solid mode on dark country roads if it helps drivers judge your distance
The brighter your lights, the earlier drivers will see you.
π 2. Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing
Black clothing disappears at night.
Instead choose:
β Reflective vest or jacket
β Reflective ankle bands
β Bright jerseys
β Reflective strips on shoes or helmet
Movement catches attention, which is why reflective ankle bands are surprisingly effective.
π΄ 3. Slow Down
You simply can't see as far at night.
That means:
β’ Brake earlier
β’ Corner more carefully
β’ Leave extra room between you and other riders
β’ Expect unexpected obstacles
Riding slightly slower gives you more time to react.
π 4. Watch the Road Carefully
At night it's much harder to spot:
π³ Potholes
πΏ Branches
πͺ¨ Loose gravel
πΎ Wildlife
π§ Wet patches
Always look further ahead than your front wheel and scan the road continuously.
π 5. Make Eye Contact
Never assume a driver has seen you.
At intersections:
β Slow down
β Make eye contact if possible
β Be prepared to stop
Being right isn't much comfort if you've been hit.
π 6. Check Your Batteries
One of the easiest mistakes is leaving home with flat lights.
Before every night ride:
π Charge your lights
π Carry a backup light if you're riding long distances
π Consider a portable battery pack for extra-long rides
Running out of light halfway through a ride is easily avoided.
π₯ 7. Ride Predictably
Drivers can judge you more easily if you:
β Hold a straight line
β Signal clearly
β Avoid sudden movements
β Stay visible Predictability makes everyone safer.
π§ 8. Be Extra Careful in Wet Conditions
Rain makes night riding even more challenging. Headlights reflect off wet roads. Braking distances increase. Visibility drops dramatically.
If it's wet:
β’ Slow down
β’ Increase following distance
β’ Brake earlier
β’ Take corners gently
β Booty Butter Pro Tip Night rides are often cooler, but don't forget your comfort. Long rides still create friction, especially if you're wearing extra layers or riding for several hours.
Apply Booty Butter Chamois Cream before every ride to stay comfortable from the first kilometre to the last.
Comfort lets you focus on the roadβnot your saddle.
π― This Week's Challenge Go for a short evening ride. Before you leave, check:
β Front light
β Rear light
β Reflective clothing
β Charged batteries
β Comfortable riding gear
Confidence comes from preparation.
π Well Done! You're now prepared to ride safely after dark and understand how visibility, planning and predictability can make every night ride safer.
