Lesson 21 - Reading the Road
🎓 BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY | LESSON 21 Reading the Road
The road is always giving you information. The more you learn to "read" what's ahead, the safer and more confident you'll become.
Experienced cyclists aren't simply stronger—they're constantly scanning, anticipating and planning.
Learning to spot hazards early gives you more time to react and helps every ride feel smoother.
👀 1. Look Further Ahead
Don't just focus on the few metres in front of your wheel. Keep your eyes 10–20 metres ahead and continually scan the road. This gives you more time to avoid hazards and adjust your position smoothly. The further ahead you look, the calmer you'll ride.
⚠️ 2. Spot Surface Hazards Early
Not all road surfaces provide the same grip.
Watch for:
- Loose gravel
- Wet leaves
- Sand
- Potholes
- Broken pavement
- Metal utility covers
- Painted road markings when wet
🚧 3. Expect the Unexpected
Assume something could happen around every blind corner.
Watch for:
- Opening car doors
- Pedestrians
- Dogs
- Wildlife
- Farm machinery
- Vehicles turning without indicating
🚦 4. Watch Traffic, Not Just the Road
Keep an eye on what's happening around you.
Notice:
- Brake lights ahead
- Cars waiting at intersections
- Vehicles approaching from side streets
- Drivers looking (or not looking) in your direction
🌬️ 5. Read the Environment
The road isn't your only challenge.
Pay attention to:
- Strong crosswinds
- Changing weather
- Shaded corners that stay wet
- Low morning sun
- Gusts created by passing trucks
💗 Bonus Tip
Sometimes avoiding a hazard means staying seated for longer than expected.
Applying Booty Butter before every ride helps reduce friction and keeps you comfortable, so your attention stays where it belongs—on the road ahead.
Comfort supports confidence.
Remember...
The safest cyclists aren't always the fastest. They're the ones who see problems before they happen. Ride alert. Ride aware. Ride one step ahead.
💗 Ride Comfortable. Ride Confident. Ride Further.
💡 Coach Booty Says "Your eyes are your best safety equipment. Look ahead, stay aware and let the road tell you its story."
⭐ Gold Star Tip When riding with others, don't just watch the rider directly in front of you. Scan well ahead through the group so you can react smoothly instead of suddenly.
