Lesson 28 - Riding in Traffic
🎓 BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY Lesson 28 – Riding in Traffic
Share the road with confidence, predictability and respect.
For many cyclists, riding in traffic is one of the biggest barriers to getting out on the bike. It can feel intimidating at first—but with the right habits and confidence, riding alongside vehicles becomes much safer and far less stressful.
The key isn't to be fearless. It's to be visible, predictable and aware.
Be Seen The safest cyclist is one that other road users notice early.
Increase your visibility by:
✔ Wearing bright or reflective clothing
✔ Using front and rear lights—even during the day
✔ Avoiding riding in drivers' blind spots
✔ Keeping your head up and looking ahead

Remember: don't assume a driver has seen you just because you can see them.
Ride Predictably
Drivers can only react to what they expect. Avoid weaving in and out between parked cars or constantly changing your line.
Instead:
✔ Ride in a straight line
✔ Maintain a steady speed where possible
✔ Signal clearly before turning or moving across the lane
✔ Make your intentions obvious

Predictable riders are safer riders.
Take the Lane When Needed
Sometimes the safest place to ride is not hugging the gutter. If the lane is too narrow for a car to safely pass, it's often safer to ride further out so drivers wait until it's safe to overtake.
Never feel pressured to squeeze into unsafe spaces.
Watch for Common Hazards
Traffic isn't just about moving cars.
Keep an eye out for:
- Car doors opening ("the door zone")
- Pedestrians stepping onto the road
- Turning vehicles
- Buses pulling away
- Potholes and storm drains
- Gravel and debris
Make Eye Contact
Whenever possible, make eye contact with drivers at intersections and roundabouts. If you're not sure they've seen you, assume they haven't.
A second of caution is always worth it.
Stay Calm
Busy roads can feel overwhelming.
If you're feeling pressured:
✔ Keep breathing steadily.
✔ Focus on riding smoothly.
✔ Don't rush decisions.
✔ Let impatient drivers go when it's safe.

Confidence comes from experience, not speed.
Coach Booty's Tip ⭐ Ride like you belong there—because you do. Cyclists are legitimate road users. Ride confidently, follow the road rules and communicate clearly. Confidence is not about being aggressive—it's about being predictable.
🎯 This Week's Challenge
On your next ride:
- Practise using clear hand signals.
- Focus on riding a straight, predictable line.
- Look well ahead instead of directly at your front wheel.
- Notice potential hazards before you reach them.
💗 Remember Every experienced cyclist was once nervous riding in traffic. Confidence grows one ride at a time.
💗 Ride Comfortable. Ride Confident. Ride Further.
