Lesson 29 - Riding in Strong Winds

🎓 BOOTY BUTTER ACADEMY Lesson 29 – Riding in Strong Winds

Don't fight the wind—learn how to work with it.

Every cyclist loves a calm day, but sooner or later you'll find yourself riding into a stiff breeze or battling unpredictable gusts.

Wind can make even an easy ride feel challenging—but with the right techniques, you can stay safe, conserve energy and keep enjoying the ride.

The secret isn't trying to beat the wind—it's learning how to ride smarter.

Know the Three Types of Wind
Not all wind affects you the same way.

🌬️ Headwind The wind blows directly towards you. This is usually the hardest because it slows you down and makes every pedal stroke feel heavier.

🌬️ Tailwind The wind pushes you from behind. Enjoy it! You'll travel faster with less effort—but remember, what goes one way usually comes back the other.

🌬️ Crosswind The wind blows from the side. Crosswinds require the most concentration because sudden gusts can push your bike sideways.

Don't Chase Your Normal Speed
One of the biggest mistakes cyclists make is trying to maintain their usual speed into a headwind.

Instead:
✔ Ride by effort rather than speed.
✔ Shift into an easier gear.
✔ Maintain a comfortable cadence.
✔ Accept that you'll be slower.

The wind is creating extra resistance—not making you weaker.

Stay Relaxed
When gusts hit unexpectedly, it's natural to tense your body.

Instead:
✔ Keep a light grip on the handlebars.
✔ Relax your shoulders.
✔ Bend your elbows slightly.
✔ Let the bike move naturally beneath you.

A relaxed rider is much more stable than a stiff one.

Watch Out for Sudden Gusts
Be extra cautious when riding:
  • Past large trucks
  • Beside buildings
  • Near open paddocks
  • Through gaps in trees
  • Over bridges
These areas often create sudden changes in wind direction. Expect them before they happen.

Position Yourself Safely
In strong crosswinds:
  • Leave extra room from the edge of the road.
  • Be aware that a gust may push you sideways.
  • Give yourself space to correct your line safely.
Never ride too close to gutters, kerbs or parked cars when it's windy.

Work With Your Group
If you're riding with others:
✔ Ride predictably.
✔ Leave slightly more space between riders.
✔ Warn others about strong gusts or hazards.
✔ Stay smooth—avoid sudden movements.

Strong winds can quickly stretch out a group ride, so patience is important.

Coach Booty's Tip ⭐ Wind is one of the best cycling teachers. It builds strength, patience and resilience. Every windy ride makes calm days feel even easier. Instead of dreading the wind, see it as free training.

🎯 This Week's Challenge
On your next windy ride:
  • Focus on maintaining a steady effort—not a specific speed.
  • Practise relaxing your upper body.
  • Notice how changing your position affects stability.
  • Finish the ride feeling controlled rather than exhausted.
💗 Remember You can't control the weather, but you can control how you respond to it. Ride smart, stay relaxed and keep moving forward.

💗 Ride comfortable. Ride confident. Ride further.
